Meet a recruited physician that performs the most advanced
Minimally-invasive surgery of its kind
Park Ridge, Illinois is far from Tuscany in Italy. But it is in Tuscany that surgeon Fabio Sbrana, M.D. honed the skills he brings to his Advocate Lutheran General Hospital patients today. In fact, in the late 90’s and early in 2000, Dr. Sbrana was one of the first surgeons in the world to see great potential in robotic-assisted surgery. He helped to build a minimally-invasive center in central Italy that was one of the most advanced of its kind. It drew attention from physicians in the United States. And, ultimately he was recruited to bring his skills to Illinois.
Today, Dr. Sbrana performs some of the most intricate and complicated cancer procedures on the da Vinci robot. Patients struggling with pancreatic, liver, esophageal and stomach cancers seek his surgical skills for minimally-invasive procedures. What Dr. Sbrana does is unique. Only one other surgeon in Chicago does similar surgeries.
“I was absolutely fascinated with the robot when I first saw it, “says Dr. Sbrana. “I was in Germany and I went back to Italy and told my colleague, this is what we need. It will help us.” More than a decade later, Dr. Sbrana is applying some of the most advanced techniques to date for the robot.
But today, Dr. Sbrana no longer does the wide range of general surgical procedures that kept him dashing from operating room to operating room at the University of Pisa in Italy. “In the United States, I have been able to specialize in the most difficult of procedures with good results”, says Sbrana. “The robot has a lot of respect for me,” he jokes. “I am controlling it and we are doing great things together for patients.”
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital offers the most comprehensive robotic surgery program in the Northern suburbs of Chicago. This includes robotic surgery for the treatment of a variety of cancers including: colorectal, endometrial, esophageal, lung, pancreatic, gynecologic and throat as well robotic hysterectomy, robotic myomectomy and numerous other procedures.
