Welcome to the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital Research website. We invite you to explore our site to learn how the James R. & Helen D. Russell Institute for Research & Innovation can support you on your research journey.
“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose” ~ Zora Neale Hurston
Our mission is to enhance the quality of care and improve health outcomes for our patients, their families, and our communities by using the tools and products of research and by promoting multidisciplinary, lifelong learning.
Longtime residents of Park Ridge, IL, James and Helen Russell started supporting Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in 1984. When Helen passed away in 1995, James made a gift in her memory. A beautiful sculpture located in our spiral garden recognizes this gift.
When James passed away in 2011, his estate gift of $14 million provided for the creation of an endowed fund to support research at Lutheran. The generosity of the Russell family – James, Helen, and their daughter Jean made it possible to develop our Institute. A dedication event and city proclamation marking the official opening of the Institute took place on October 24, 2012.
