Time-of-Flight PET/CT Imaging

The great advancement with Time-of-Flight technology is the very high resolution of the images it produces. This state-of-the-art scanning technology allows physicians to measure tumor metabolism, which indicates tumor aggressiveness, and provides them with higher quality images.

What is Time-of-Flight?
Conventional PET scanners create images by observing gamma rays produced by radioisotopes injected in the body. Although these conventional scans track where the rays go, they don’t consider the time it takes for each ray to reach the detector. Time-of-Flight PET scans, on the other hand, do measure this time difference which significantly improves the images provided by the scan. Coupled with CT scans, physicians get perspectives that are available only through two separate scans in some facilities.

What is Time-of-Flight used for?
At Lutheran General, the technology is initially being used primarily for oncology. It can be used to diagnose and to manage lung, colon, esophageal, head and neck cancer, melanomas, brain tumors and other types of cancer. It is also valuable for oncology patients who have been through treatment but require periodic scans to determine whether additional radiation or chemotherapy is warranted. These Time-of-Flight PET/CT images will play a key role in radiation therapy planning by precisely mapping out tumor boundaries and avoiding radiation to the adjacent normal tissue.
