Electrocardiography (EKG) Electrocardiography (EKG or ECG) is a painless procedure that is used to investigate heart disease. An EKG involves the placement of 12 leads on the chest area, which enable the measurement of electrical signals of the rhythm of the heartbeat. The test is performed by a technologist and only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Results are usually sent to your doctor within 5 to 7 work days.
