Holter Monitor
What is a holter monitor?
A holter monitor is a small electrocardiogram (EKG) that is carried with you. The holter monitor enables a longer recording of your heartbeat to be made while away from your doctor's office. This recording can then be reviewed by a cardiologist at a later time.
Your Holter Monitor
Holter monitoring begins with the placement of small pads (electrodes) on your chest. These pads are connected to the holter monitor. The lightweight unit is then attached to a belt or shoulder strap and must be worn for at least 22 hours.
While wearing the monitor:
- Try to sleep on your back.
- Do not take a shower. Take a sponge bath instead.
- Follow your normal routine. You may work and/or exercise.
Be sure to stay away from:
- Electric blankets
- Magnets
- Metal detectors
- High-voltage areas such as power lines
Holter Monitor Diary
Be sure to keep a diary while wearing the monitor. Your diary should include the following information:
- The time of day for each entry you make.
- A notation for each change in activity, including when you take medicine.
- A notation of any symptoms you feel.
Below is a diary with sample entries. Your own entries will differ from the example shown.

Your Test Results
You will be provided with instructions for when and how to return the monitor and diary. The data collected will be analyzed by a computer and reviewed by a cardiologist on staff at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. A written report will be mailed to your physician in approximately five to seven work days. Please contact your physician to discuss your results.
