Philosophy
Research has shown that most of a child's potential for learning is established by age 6. During these early years, children need a stimulating environment that will enable them to build their own knowledge through many and varied opportunities to see, hear, smell, taste and touch. They need opportunities to explore and experiment, to question and guess, to fail and try again. Most importantly, children need a nurturing environment, where they can feel secure and can trust that they are loved and cared for. These objectives require teachers who are trained to be "edu-caring" professionals, competent in providing both education and loving care.

At Lutheran General Children's Day Care (LGCDC), each child under 6 is provided a primary caregiver to help both child and family develop trust in the environment and in the adults who provide care and education. Teachers are trained to recognize a child's basic temperament and style of learning so they can relate to the child most effectively. A trusting relationship between the primary caregiver and the child fosters self-confidence and a desire to learn.

Research supports the LGCDC philosophy that young children learn primarily through play. Children's readiness for formal schooling is most effectively promoted by play experiences in which they feel the freedom to try out new ideas, practice skills and imitate adult roles.

Finally, LGCDC is committed to supporting families whose school aged children need a safe out-of-school-hours opportunity to make friends and engage in appropriate and interesting activities that provide a change of pace from the busy school day.
