Advocate Health Care Receives National Recognition for Its Green Efforts
Building on its long track record of building healthier communities and improving the environment, Advocate Health Care is the only health system in Illinois featured as a success story in the first edition of the Milestone Report by the Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI).
Advocate South Suburban Hospital, part of the Advocate system, implemented a “Green Team” of associates who are environmental stewards and educators of environmentally conscious initiatives. This team, led by Marjorie Fremouw, Manager of Supply Chain at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, consistently tracks efforts that best and most efficiently use resources.
“Employee education is key”, said Fremouw. “Efforts over the past years have focused on recycling, and not just paper and plastic but of additional items such as toner cartridges, pens, equipment packaging and batteries. Our employees need to know what we recycle and have drop-off points throughout the hospital for these items.”
Advocate South Suburban Hospital reduced paper use by 3 percent in 2012.
“We will continue to reduce as more of our medical records and documentation processes transition to electronic over the next year,” said Fremouw.
A large emphasis will be placed on the sustainable workplace in 2013. A checklist is provided to each office area within the hospital measuring their environmental stewardship efforts. Members of the “Green Team” will audit office spaces to recognize the good environmental stewards and offer suggestions for further improvement.
The HHI report recognizes Advocate for significantly lowering costs and improving patient health by incorporating green sustainability initiatives into every day work. For a complete list of hospitals included in the Milestone Report, visit HHI’s website, http://healthierhospitals.org/.
