ophthalmology

In September of 2003, Thomas John, MD, an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, became the first doctor in Illinois - and one of the first in the country - to implant an artificial cornea.

The benefit of the artificial cornea over a transplanted human cornea is that the artificial version carries no risk of rejections. Therefore, it's a good option for patients who are likely to reject a human cornea and are not a candidate for conventional cornea transplant surgery.

For more information on this exciting procedure, access our Frequently Asked Questions and Patient Brochure.
