Melanoma: A Patient’s Guide
Characteristics Of Abnormal Moles

Know your ABCDs
A mole is more likely to be abnormal if:

asymmetric mole

A. One-half of the mole does not match the other half (i.e. it is asymmetric)

jagged-edged mole

B. The edge (border) of the mole is jagged or irregular

mole with more than one color

C. More than one color is present in the mole

mole larger than 5mm

D. It is larger than 5mm in diameter (the size of a pencil eraser)

Remember, thin melanomas are curable! Get to know your skin and moles well. If changes occur, report them to your physician and if he/she thinks it is necessary, a biopsy can be done to detect the melanoma early while it is curable. Often this can be done by surgery alone.
