Hot! Hot! Hot!
Sun Smarts

Most of us love the sun. It is nice and bright, it promotes growth, makes us feel good, gets us outside, and everything seems to look better in the sun. But, repeatedly exposing oneself to too much sun can result in premature aging, wrinkling of the skin, even skin cancer.

Those at highest risk of sunburn are those with fair skin, light eyes, blond or red hair, those who work outside, and those taking certain medications including tetracycline, sulfa drugs, and some diuretics. Ask your physician for more details regarding your prescription.

To practice "sun smart" habits and avoid sunburn the following precautions should be taken:

  1. Avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day—10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  2. Use sunblock at all times. Remember—just because you are not fair skinned doesn't mean you don't need protection. The lighter the skin, the higher the SPF (sun protective factor) needed.
  3. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every hour and after swimming.
  4. Since brilliant colors reflect the sun onto the face, wear softer, lighter colors.

Having "sun smarts" may seem very basic, but it is also very important. Preserve your skin and your health—Have a wonderful, fun, and safe summer.
