Exercise: Get the Maximum Mileage
When it comes to exercise, most of us tend to quantify our success in measurable results: pounds lost, weight lifted, cholesterol lowered, etc. Try letting go and enjoying the quality of exercise, the simple pleasure of moving and satisfaction in being active.
- Focus on how you feel. Let go of the control panels, cardiomonitors and stop watches. If you run, bike, row or swim, ignore the clock and concentrate on how good you feel.
- Enjoy the process. Think about exercise as a process, a lifelong learning experience, rather than a product with immediate payoffs. Some days will be better than others, but ultimately you will progress.
- Get connected. Working out is a great way to get connected-- to people, places, traditions or nature. If you're alone a lot, enroll in a fitness class. To become a part of a community, try activities like ballroom dancing or join a volleyball team.
- Incorporate exercise into your whole life. Consider how exercise might help you evolve as a person, in addition to changing your body. It can teach you patience, persistence and build your confidence. When you approach your workout as an inner journey, you'll begin to get the maximum mileage out of it.
