Senior Fitness: Just Do It
Fitness is important at any age, but the benefits become more dramatic as our bodies age. If you're over 55 and considering starting or redefining a fitness program, take a look at the following:
Begin with a general physical evaluation. Your doctor can help you tailor an exercise program to address known problems like a previous heart attack or old injuries. He or she can also tell how much exercise is appropriate.
Define your goals. Do you want to be able to power walk with your neighbors? Play a game of tennis without fatigue? Pick up a new hobby or sport? Knowing what you're aiming for will help keep you on target and keep boredom at bay.
Decide where you want to work out. Do you want to socialize or do you prefer working out alone? A comfortable environment is critical to making fitness a regular part of your routine.
Consider activities that don't require a lot of equipment. This way, getting started doesn't require a large investment. And you'll be able to better maintain your routine when you're away from home.
Remember flexibility. As we age, tendons and muscles become less pliable and there is a tendency to develop diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis which can limit motion. Remember to complete a thorough stretching routine before and after your workout.
