Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce

Try this delicious, generations-old Italian tomato sauce in your lasagna, or ladled over any type of pasta. It makes for a hearty meal without adding a lot of extra calories and fat.

1 24 oz. can crushed Italian tomatoes
1 small can tomato paste
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1 to 1-1/2 lbs. ground sirloin

2 tsp. sugar
salt and pepper
2 tsp. dried basil
1 Bay leaf
1 tsp. celery salt
1 cube beef bouillon
1 tbsp. margarine
1 tbsp. olive oil

(Reduced-sodium tomatoes, paste and bouillon can be used to lower the amount of sodium.)

Brown the onion and garlic in the olive oil and margarine, then add the ground sirloin. Mix well while browning, separating the meat with a fork. Do this until the meat is well-browned, then add tomatoes and tomato paste. Over low heat, add salt and pepper to taste, basil, sugar, beef bouillon cube, celery salt and Bay leaf. Cook over low heat for about one hour. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking. Remove Bay leaf before serving.

Serves 6.
