Look at the Bright Side

A positive outlook isn't just good for the soul - it's good for your body, too, researchers say. For example, some studies indicate that optimism boosts immunity and helps combat certain diseases like heart disease and cancer. But if you're one who's naturally inclined to think the glass is half empty, rather than half full - don't worry. Optimists are made, not born. The secret? Although you can't always change circumstances, you can change the way you react to them. It's as easy as one, two, three:

  1. Consider keeping a journal of daily events. Take a look at your entries at the end of the week and note how you could have described events more objectively. In the future, aim to find the positive in negative events.
  2. Spend more time with upbeat people. Moods are as infectious as the common cold... make sure you catch a good one.
  3. If all else fails, just smile. According to research, even pretending to feel cheerful can help bring on the real thing.

Spring is the season of fresh starts. So go ahead and do all those things you've been putting off. Clean out your closets, get back in touch with a friend and embark on a new fitness program. But before you start, get a clean bill of health. Let Advocate Health Care help you find a physician.
