Ten Secrets to Healthy Food Shopping
- Never shop on an empty stomach.
- Select canned fruits and tuna packed in water, not syrup or oil.
- Check labels for the words "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated." The earlier they appear in the ingredient list, the higher the amount of unhealthy trans fatty acids a food contains.
- Buy skinless turkey or chicken breast meat.
- If selecting frozen dinners, choose those that are not only low in fat, but also low in sodium and cholesterol.
- Try calcium-fortified orange juice if you're not consuming enough dairy products.
- Opt for whole-grain breads, rolls and cereals.
- Consider cantaloupe. For just 95 calories, half a melon provides more than a day's supply of vitamin C and beta carotene.
- Don't be fooled by yogurt-covered raisins or nuts. The coating is usually made of sugar and partially hydrogenated oil.
- Go for these low-fat goodies: pretzels, ginger snaps, graham crackers and angel food cake.
