Cancer center going up in Downers Grove
Cancer care at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital will take a big leap forward this summer.
Thats when the hospitals new Cancer Care Center is set to open. The facility is located on a former parking lot on the hospital campus at 3815 Highland Avenue in Downers Grove.
The new center will offer radiation services, including a state-of-the-art system called intensity modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT. IMRT enables radiation oncologists to focus beams of radiation on tumors more precisely, thus sparing nearby healthy cells. The results? There are fewer side effects, because more healthy tissue is spared. And treatment is more effective, because in many cases higher radiation doses can be used.
Services at the center will be comprehensive in non-clinical ways as well. A patient-education area will offer books, videos, literature and Internet access for patients, their families and caregivers.
