Understanding your medical bills

Understanding your medical bills For the most part, change is good. A lot of change, however, requires organization, especially when dealing with medical insurance. Whether being treated for a chronic condition or simply trying to enjoy retirement in good health, many seniors become bogged down with changes in Medicare claim form paperwork. Advocate Health Care wants you to concentrate on your health and not your medical bills, so it offers free insurance counseling at many of its hospitals.

“Anyone who is treated at an Advocate hospital that offers insurance counseling is eligible to set up free one-on-one meetings,” says Socorro Torres, supervisor of patient financial services at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

The service helps patients with financial issues, including assessing finances to determine what you can afford to pay and how to receive assistance for the portion you can’t afford. Advocate’s insurance counselors or business office personnel can help you apply for public aid, charity or special payment arrangements in order to cover the bills. Counselors also can explain changes in Medicare and provide information so you can find the right prescription drug program.

“Billing can be difficult to understand, too. A few people have come to us with shopping bags full of medical bills, and we help sort through them,” says Torres. Some counselors also can clarify insurance billing methods to prevent future bill buildup.

Many older patients seek financial guidance after they receive collection notices due to unpaid medical bills. “A significant number of patients have this problem, and it’s nothing to fear or feel ashamed about,” says Torres. Establishing an ongoing relationship with a Senior Advocate counselor may keep this from happening.

Advocate’s insurance counselors work with you until you’re comfortable with your insurance and financial options. “The counselors want all patients to leave the hospital with smiles on their faces,” says Torres.
