Technical Standards

The Respiratory Care Program has specified the following non-academic criteria (technical standards) that all applicants must meet in order to participate and complete the program. Evaluation of the following standards will be completed during the admission interview.

Observation
Applicants must:

  • participate actively in all demonstrations, laboratory, exercises, and clinical experience
  • assess and comprehend the condition of all patients assigned for examination diagnosis and treatment

Communication
Applicants must demonstrate they can:

  • communicate effectively and sensitively with patients in order to elicit information, describe changes in mood, activity and posture
  • assess non-verbal communications
  • effectively and efficiently transmit information to patients, fellow students, faculty and staff

Motor Function
Applicants must:

  • possess sufficient motor function to perform appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • perform basic psychomotor skills necessary interpret appropriate examinations and procedures
  • execute motor movements reasonably required to provide general care and emergency treatment to patients

Intellectual/Conceptual Integrative and Quantitative Abilities
Applicants must show the ability to:

  • measure
  • calculate
  • reason
  • analyze
  • evaluate
  • demonstrate problem solving and critical thinking skills demanded of allied health practitioners

Behavioral and Social Attributes
Applicants must:

  • utilize time effectively in a full time academic and clinical environment
  • function effectively under stress
  • adapt to a changing environment
  • display flexibility
  • possess the emotional health required for the utilization of the applicant's intellectual abilities
