Salary and Benefits

Salary
Compensation offered to those in the Internal Medicine Residency Program is adjusted annually by the University of Illinois to provide similar or superior benefits to programs in the Chicago area. For the academic year 2007 - 2008, the annual salaries are:

PGY 1 $42,960
PGY 2 $44,880
PGY 3 $46,800

Presently, Advocate Christ Medical Center allots up to $3,000 for each PGY-2 and PGY-3 resident for professional and educational expenses. This fund may be used to reimburse costs for approved conferences, travel (including travel for interviews), books, computer programs, etc. In addition, categorical residents receive money toward Cecil's or Harrison's Textbook of Medicine in the PGY-1 year and a subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year. throughout all three years, categorical residents receive ACP-ASIM membership, which includes a subscription to the Annals of Internal Medicine and ACP Journal Club. The program provides all residents with a subscription to Up-To-Date.

Vacation
One four-week vacation per year (For PGY 2s and PGY 3s, vacation may be taken in two-week blocks, based on availability.) Also, PGY 1s at the end of the academic year receive an additional week of unpaid leave. In addition to vacation, each resident has three personal days, which may be taken any time with approval of the program director.

Insurance
Health Insurance: A resident may select any health insurance plan offered by UIC, but any costs beyond the approved reimbursement amount will be borne by the resident.

Disability Insurance: Effective July 1, 2000, the residents’ waiting period for short-term disability coverage was shortened from 180 days to 90 days. Questions or requests for claim forms should be directed to the Graduate Medical Education Offices.

Life Insurance: The life insurance benefit of one year’s stipend is provided without cost to the resident.
