Evaluation and Feedback

Resident Evaluation
We recognize the importance of ongoing evaluation and feedback to improve one's performance. The program utilizes multiple sources in evaluating housestaff, ensuring a complete and multi-dimensional assessment of performance. Evaluations are obtained from peers, nursing staff, medical students and patients. In addition, residents are evaluated and given feedback by the attending physician at the end of each rotation.

All residents are assigned a faculty advisor who is available to give assistance throughout the training period. The role of the advisor is to give feedback regarding performance, provide career counseling, and serve as a mentor. Faculty advisors are assigned nor more than four residents.

A committee comprising all the faculty advisors meets quarterly to review housestaff performance. They also work together to implement policies designed to improve the program. In addition, residents are evaluated and given feedback by the attending physician at the end of each rotation.

Residents participate in the annual in-service examination which helps target areas for further self study and review.

Program Evaluation
We believe a program must continuously seek ways to improve itself to maintain the highest quality. Therefore, using the principles of Continuous Quality Improvement, we make a continuous effort to review and improve the quality of the program. The Resident Advisory Committee, made up of elected representatives of the housestaff, meets monthly with the program director and selected faculty members. The program director also meets monthly with the housestaff to discuss their concerns or issues.

In addition, residents are asked to provide anonymous evaluations of faculty performance and the quality of each rotation. This information, evaluated annually, enables us to further review and refine the teaching activities in the program.
