Curriculum

Anesthesia
Residents spend four weeks with an anesthesiologist in both major and minor procedures. Clinical experiences include learning venipuncture techniques, the administering of intravenous agents, airway management, anesthesia induction and intubation, administration of anesthetic agents, prevention and treatments of anesthetic emergencies, and assessment of patient recovery from anesthesia.

Dental Van
Residents will spend time on a fully equipped mobile dental van. Comprehensive dental care is provided to underserved populations including children, adolescents and geriatric patients. Once a month, the van will treat homeless patients at night as part of the Midnight Ministry.

Emergency Room
Residents rotate for two weeks in the emergency room/Level I trauma center at Illinois Masonic. This rotation follows the history and physical course where residents get exposure to common medical and surgical problems and treatment of dental emergencies.

ENT Clinic
Residents will spend two weeks in the ENT Clinic and the objective of this rotation is for the residents to become proficient in history taking, physical evaluation, and diagnosis of head and neck disorders. Residents are expected to increase their knowledge of surgical management of common disorders and to participate in rounds and in the operation room as well.

Oral Surgery
The residents will do a one month rotation and will do simple, uncomplicated exodontia, surgical exodontia, medical risk assessment, and minor oral surgery, and gain experience in various sedation techniques while in the operating room and ambulatory surgery areas. This will be done in the Oral Surgery Service, Department of Surgery at Cook County Hospital.

TMJ/Oral Medicine Clinic
Residents will rotate through the TMJ/Oral Medicine Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Experience in history taking, diagnosis and management of patients with temporomandibular disorders, facial pain, and diseases of the oral cavity are emphasized.

Special Patient Care
Since the program emphasizes dental treatment of underserved populations, care of developmentally disabled patients will occur on a weekly basis. These cases are managed under local or IV sedation in the clinic, or general anesthesia in the hospital operating room.
