TOPIC:   Professional Leave
PURPOSE:   To clarify professional leave requirements and responsibilities.
POLICY:   Residents may use the "personal days", described in their benefits package, for educational activities outside the program.

Procedure

  1. Residents may, on occasion, choose to attend an educational activity outside the hospital.
  2. Such special and unique educational activities should be consistent with the goals and objectives of the resident's training program.
  3. The resident may request the three "personal days", which are part of the benefits package, for professional leave.
  4. The Program Director will evaluate the request and, as with all other time off, will be responsible for approving, or not approving, the request.
  5. This policy does not preclude each program from making additional time available to residents to attend outside conferences, if consistent with the goals of the educational program.

Note: For out of hospital rotations not in the curriculum, refer to Policy GE-18
