TOPIC:   Resident Physician/Attending Physician Clinical Disagreement Policy for Residents
PURPOSE:   To provide resident physicians with a procedure for resolution of clinical disagreements with attending physicians in which, in the opinion of the resident, there is a significant potential for serious patient harm.

Procedure

Step1   A disagreement or concern should engender a professional discussion among the individuals immediately involved (for example: between the resident and the ordering attending). This conversation may clarify both positions and result in problem resolution. This should include, when appropriate, consultation with the Senior Resident/Chief Resident (as applicable).
Step2

If the resident is not satisfied with the results of Step 1, he/she should bring the issue to the attending physician of record (if different from the ordering attending).

Step3

If the resident is not satisfied with the results of Step 2, he/she should bring the issue to the Program Director (of the resident's home program) or directly to the Chairmen of the Department in which the resident is rotating.
