TOPIC:   Dismissal of Residents
PURPOSE:   To establish guidelines for the dismissal of residents.
POLICY:   Residents may be dismissed for just cause in which case they have the right to invoke the appeals process.

Procedure

  1. A resident may be dismissed by the Program Director for conduct that is unacceptable in a postgraduate medical student. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    1. Failure to comply with the terms of the resident's contract including failure to maintain a valid medical license and/or visa.
    2. Unprofessional conduct.
    3. Unethical conduct.
    4. Employment Rule Violations
    5. Conviction of a felony.
    6. Substandard performance that has not responded to appropriate departmental remediation efforts.
  2. The Director of Medical Education and the Vice President of Human Resources (designee) must be contacted prior to a resident dismissal.
  3. A resident that is dismissed must be notified in writing and must be provided with a written copy of the Appeals Process Policy at the time of dismissal.
