Special Features

Armed Forces Institute of Pathology
Many residents select a four-week elective program at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington D.C., which is paid for by Illinois Masonic.

Chest Radiology and Mammography
A high-volume section with approximately 40,000 chest exams viewed annually. Computed radiography equipment, high resolution CT and mammography with stereotactic capability enhance the resident's experience.

Gastrointestinal Radiology
State-of-the-art digital fluoroscopic G.I. suites with the availability of remote control is a special feature in the program. Radiology and gastroenterology perform endoscopic retrograde pancreatocholangiography.

Musculoskeletal Radiology
Residents review more than 100 MRI studies of joints each month. The department houses a scanner that is the fastest, most powerful available. Residents are also trained in CT arthrography.

Genitourinary
Residents receive instruction involving standard methods of urography plus CT and MRI advancements. A joint project with the Department of Urology details ultrasound and guided prostate biopsy—a unique offering at Illinois Masonic.

Neuroradiology
Case material referred by neurology and neurosurgery coupled with a busy trauma center ensures extensive neuroradiology experience. Hands-on experience is extensive.

Nuclear Medicine
Radiologists work with cardiology fellows and attendings to perform nuclear cardiology investigations in radiology. Resident training is supplemented by an intensive weekly lecture series on radiochemistry, radiobiology and radiation physics.

Research
Clinical research opportunities relating to all disciplines of radiology are available and encouraged. At minimum, participation in one research project is required to successfully complete the program.

Special Procedures
Residents receive exceptional procedure experience with more than 500 cases. Biplane digital subtraction filmless angiography equipment is available. Illinois Masonic is one of few hospitals offering lymphangiography training.

Ultrasound
More than 9,000 diagnostic ultrasound examinations are performed annually, including all specialties. Peripheral vascular ultrasound is performed in conjunction with the vascular lab.
