Conferences
A variety of conferences and other educational activities are provided to augment the surgical experience. Some are held in common and afford the opportunity for residents at varying MGH sites to meet on a regular basis.

Educational activities common to residents at all MGH Hospitals include the following:

• Weekly Surgery-Radiology Clinical Correlation Conferences
• Saturday Grand Rounds held at each hospital on a rotating basis
• Weekly Surgical Pathology Conferences
• Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
• Monthly Journal Club
• Visiting Professor Program

Research Year
Each MGH resident is expected to publish at least one original paper in a referred medical journal during the five-year residency program. In an average year the residents of the MGH Residency publish approximately six research papers.

Each year, one PGY 2 resident from the Categorical program is afforded the opportunity to spend his or her third year in full-time research activity--either clinical or laboratory. This research year is in addition to the five regular years of clinical training. The research opportunities available encompass all the resources of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago but are not limited to the University of Illinois.

Research facilities and excellent support staff are available. In addition, the animal laboratory at the University of Illinois College of Medicine provides to all MGH residents a wide variety of opportunities for research projects.

Clinic Description
Each MGH hospital has outpatient clinics where residents serve as primary physician and the responsible attending surgeon acts as consultant. In addition, residents see patients at the offices of faculty members. Together, they make the diagnosis, admit the patient and prepare him for surgery, conduct the surgery, and participate in the follow-up care and rehabilitation.
