Special Features

Education Experiences
The program includes an organizational structure of academic, clinical, and technical criteria to facilitate the education of residents in general surgery. Maintain educational criteria that are congruent with the aims of the American Board of Surgery and the Residency Review Committee in General Surgery. Facilitate the self-directed study of residents via recommended readings and learning activities.

Clinical Experiences
Integrate principles of basic sciences with clinical experiences with monthly exams, where answers are discussed.

Resident Responsibility
Guide the mechanism for residents' progressive responsibility from initial patient care to complete patient management for all patient age groupings, from neonatal to the oldest patient.

Continuing Education
Foster continuing education to promote lifelong individual initiative and creative scholarship.

The MGH Residency consists of two distinctly different programs:

• Preliminary Program, one-or two-year program aimed at preparing residents interested in pursuing a surgical or non-surgical specialty
• Categorical Program, a five-year program which prepares residents for board certification in general surgery. In both programs, residents are accepted at the PGY 1 level directly after completing medical school.
