The Fellowship in Cardiology

Our three-year fellowship training program is designed to provide an extensive experience in a broad range of cardiovascular diseases and procedures. We offer a broad array of advanced technologies, but place special emphasis on the practical skills of physical diagnosis and cognitive decision making through evidence-based strategies. The fellow is an integral component of our active invasive cardiac catheterization service as well as the non-invasive heart station rotation. Experience caring for post-operative open heart patients, in addition to a busy consult service is key to the training process. Cardiovascular teaching attendings interact at all levels, and on a daily basis, with the fellow during rounds, seminars, presentations and inpatient/outpatient diagnosis and management. Dedicated time is also provided for research and basic science interests.

Areas of training include:

  1. 10-bed Coronary Intensive Care Unit
  2. 45-bed Telemetry and Intermediate Care Unit
  3. Surgical lntensive Care Unit
  4. Three Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories with a 9-bed holding area and two dedicated Electrophysiology Suites
  5. Heart Station Non-lnvasive Cardiovascular Unit
  6. Nuclear Imaging Laboratory
  7. Outpatient Cardiology Offices

Graduates will satisfy all requirements to be eligible to sit for the cardiology board examination upon completion of the fellowship. Our board pass rate is 98%.

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is a 609-bed teaching, research and tertiary care facility, Level 1 Trauma Center and one of the largest hospitals in the Chicago area. It serves as the primary location for the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program, and offers three fellowship positions each year.
