The Fellowship in Geriatrics

The Lutheran General Hospital Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is a one-year fellowship. There are three fellowship-trained geriatricians involved in the teaching program. The fellowship is designed to train internists and family practitioners to develop into clinician-teachers in the field of geriatric medicine. Lutheran General offers two fellowship positions in Geriatric Medicine.

The General Goals and Objectives are as follows:

  1. The trainee will develop knowledge and skills to practice primary care and consultative geriatric medicine. The fellow will train in various settings to accomplish this goal including the acute hospital, ambulatory care, nursing home, assisted living, adult day care and hospice settings.
  2. The trainee will develop administrative skills to function as a director in the hospital, nursing home, subacute care, and in-home care settings.
  3. The trainee will develop knowledge and skills to review the medical literature and understand research designs and computers in the use of research.
  4. The trainee will develop skills teaching geriatrics to medical students and other physicians.

The Block Clinical Rotations include the following:

  1. Acute Hospital: 2 months
  2. Rehabilitation Medicine: 1 month
  3. Geriatric Psychiatry: 1 month
  4. Neurology: 1 month
  5. Long-term Care: 3 months
  6. Hospice/Home Care: 1 month
  7. Electives: 3 months

The Longitudinal Rotations include the following:

  1. Long-term Care: 12 months
  2. Ambulatory Care: 12 months

In order to apply, the trainee must have graduated successfully from an internal medicine or family practice residency.
