Background
The pharmacy practice residency at Lutheran General Hospital is based on the principles and philosophies set forth in the "Accreditation Standard for Pharmacy Practice Residency Training" established by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. The program provides comprehensive, postgraduate training in acute patient care, ambulatory care, and drug information and practice management with an emphasis on pharmaceutical care. The program is flexible enough to provide the resident with an opportunity to concentrate on a practice area of special interest. The program goes beyond content knowledge (rotations in school), to develop cognitive and professional skills of a professional. The residency program participates in the ASHP residency-matching program for its candidates. The matched residents sign a year-long contract and must follow all conditions of being an Advocate Lutheran General Hospital employee as well as a Pharmacy Resident.

Intended Program Outcomes
Upon completion of the pharmacy practice residency,
the resident should be able to:

1. Provide pharmaceutical care in a variety of environments, as a competent, confident practitioner.
2. Function as a member of the health care team, demonstrating maturity and effective interpersonal communication skills.
3. Apply the highest standards of professional practice, demonstrating a commitment to pharmacy practice.
4. Through self-assessment, be able to manage their own practice and monitor their own development.
5. Effectively educate other health care professionals, patients and community members regarding health care issues.
6. Demonstrate personal drive and enthusiasm to become a leader in pharmacy practice.
