The Healthy Steps for Young Children Program is a national initiative that focuses on birth to age three. It emphasizes the importance of a close relationship between health care professionals and mothers and fathers in addressing the physical, emotional, and intellectual growth and development of children in the early years. Now being implemented in two dozen pediatric and family practices across the country, Healthy Steps is coordinated by The Commonwealth Fund with local support from community-focused foundations and health care providers. A national evaluation will result in a study of effectiveness and costs.
