Comfort

Take some time to reflect upon the people, places and experiences that have given you comfort throughout your life.

Happiness is a butterfly which when pursued is just beyond your grasp... but if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
—Nathaniel Hawthorne
  1. Is there a person who helps you to feel comforted and accepted with whom you can spend some time? Can you find it within yourself to ask this person for time when you are needing to feel safe and comforted? If the person is not available, then perhaps you can close your eyes and imagine yourself in the presence of a person who has given you a great sense of comfort, acceptance and safety. Sit with that person and talk with him or her about your fears, struggles and joys.

  2. Sit quietly and imagine yourself in the presence of God. Feel God holding you in His tender arms of care. Unburden your soul. Accept God’s comfort and care for you.

  3. Do you have a favorite place, perhaps from childhood where you went for comfort and to feel safe? Do you have a place to go for that feeling now? If you are not able to physically go to that place, go there in your mind. Breathe slowly in, breathe out, and become aware of your breathing as you begin to walk toward that special place of comfort. Remain there to experience the feeling of comfort, safety and connection that you remember.

  4. Inside myself is a place where I live all alone and that's where you renew your springs that never dry up.
    —Pearl S. Buck
  5. Are there some readings or scriptures from your faith tradition that offer you a sense of comfort? Mark them so that you can access them when you are feeling a need for comfort. Is there a poem or other writing that gives you a sense of comfort? Read it each day during a quiet time that you set aside just for yourself.

  6. Is there particular music that you find relaxing? Is it readily available to you? Spend some time relaxing with your favorite musical pieces.
