Advocate Children's Hospital - Park Ridge:
Advocate Children's Hospital - Park Ridge is a premier 150-bed children's hospital serving the north and northwest metropolitan area of greater Chicago. It is a level-I pediatric trauma center. Every pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty is represented at Advocate Children's, including pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. Most faculty members hold academic appointments, and many are involved in research.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit:
The PICU at Advocate Children's Hospital is a 15-bed fully monitored unit, which cares for children of all ages, from newborns to young adults. The PCCM service averages 1000 admissions yearly and specializes in tertiary and quaternary pediatric critical care, including cardiothoracic surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and an active renal replacement therapy program. Patients with various life-threatening conditions such as trauma, infections, and postoperative instability are also admitted to the PICU.
The PICU is staffed by six full-time board-certified pediatric intensivists, who have the overall responsibility for all care delivered in the PICU. Pediatric cardiothoracic, neurological, and general surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, and specialists in infectious diseases and hematology/oncology contribute as consultants, teachers and researchers. The unit has continuous in-house coverage by second- and third-year pediatric residents. Occasionally, medical students do an elective rotation with us. Seventy registered nurses with special training and interest in critical care work in the PICU, and respiratory therapists are present 24 hours a day. Support staff (clinical pharmacists, social workers, a nurse-researcher and others) are available for consultations.
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine runs an active transport team, which transports critically-ill children by ground and by air. The transport team is managed by pediatric critical care medicine fellows and attendings.
