Advocate Trinity Hospital Wound Care Center Treats Patients

with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Chicago, IL-- For Chicago’s southeast side residents, advanced healing is now possible thanks to Trinity Hospital’s new Wound Care Center.  Housing the latest advances in medicine and state-of-the-art equipment, previously untreatable wounds now have a chance of being healed.

On August 29, 2012, the Wound Care Center treated its first hyperbaric patient.

“No matter how much oxygen we breathe, we can’t saturate our hemoglobin. It’s like pouring water into a glass—once the glass is full, the water will spill over. But, with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, oxygen molecules are infused into the plasma which goes into the tissue… and that helps heal the wound,” said Dr. Daniel Vera, general surgeon and Wound Care Center doctor.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100% pure oxygen while lying inside a pressurized chamber. The air pressure is raised three times higher than normal air pressure, where your lungs can gather up to three times more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

Blood carries this oxygen throughout the body, stimulating the release of substances called “growth factors” and “stem cells”, which promote healing and help fight infection.

At Trinity’s Wound Care Center, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Arterial wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Venous stasis ulcers
  • Trauma wounds
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Soft tissue infections
  • Radiation tissue damage
  • Problem surgical wounds

“The Wound Care Center is a self-referral center, so you don’t need your doctor’s referral to come here, said Dr. Vera. “ If you’re not happy with your wounds or have long-standing wounds that have been treated for years and not healed… this is the place to come.”

The Advocate Trinity Wound Care Center has partnered with Healogics™, which has a nationwide network of researchers and specialists and manages more than 500 wound care centers nationwide.

Physicians, nurses and technicians at the Advocate Trinity Wound Care Center receive specialized training at the Healogics training facility located in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Advocate Trinity Wound Care Center offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm.
