Cancer Survivor Beats the Odds and Becomes a Mother
Four generations of Kourtney's family
Chicago, IL – At just 21 years old, Kourtney Thomas was lying in an operating room with her breast exposed-- her doctor about to cut out her cancer. Kourtney’s story started out ominous, but it is not a sad story… it’s a wonderful one. In fact, Kourtney Thomas, a cancer survivor, beat the odds and just delivered a baby boy!
The now 24-year-old breast cancer survivor was treated at Trinity Hospital back in 2009 after finding a lump during a routine self breast exam. Both of Kourtney's grandmothers had been diagnosed with breast cancer, so she knew the odds and scheduled a mammogram at Trinity immediately.
Three days later, Kourtney's doctor had her results- she had cancer. And two weeks later, she was in the operating room at Trinity getting a lumpectomy.
“It was such a scary time. I mean, I was only 21 years old. My mind was racing. I kept asking, why me? But my doctors and nurses at Trinity assured me that I would be okay.”
In fact, thanks to the doctors, nurses and radiologists at Trinity, Kourtney recovered quickly, but was told she may not be able to have children right away. However, in August, Kourtney returned to Trinity nine-months pregnant and ready to have a little boy.
Dr. Mary Kate Palmore was Kourtney’s OB/Gyn and delivered Kourtney’s son. Dr. Palmore first met Kourtney at Trinity’s 2011 gala before Kourtney was ever pregnant.
“Kourtney’s delivery was extra special because she worked so hard throughout her entire pregnancy. The odds were against her and she did it, and to see the support of her family there in the delivery room was amazing.” said Dr. Palmore.
Kourtney recently returned to Trinity to say thank Dr. Palmore and the nurses who helped her through her delivery, and she brought her now two month old son, Reason.
“When I first came to Trinity it was such a scary time in my life, but to be able to come back three years later and give birth to my son here… it was the most wonderful feeling. Reason is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I was able to share it with the people who helped save my life.”
