The Open Airways Program provides asthma education for grade school children and faculty, and is designed by the American Lung Association. The program's goal is to teach children how to manage their asthma. The four-week program is led by a Advocate Trinity Hospital respiratory therapist. It covers asthma, asthma triggers, medication and how to manage the disease. Children are provided with peak flow meters and spacers and instructed on their use. Other topics covered during the course include:
- Emergency management
- Peak flow monitoring
- Asthma action plans
Upon completion of the program, every child receives a certificate. Parental consent is required.
