Treatment options for uterine fibroids

Interventional radiology minimizes risk and lessens recovery time

Patients at Advocate Trinity Hospital have access to state-of-the-art technologies that can help diagnose and treat their conditions, as well as relieve pain. From advanced X-rays to ultrasound, these minimally invasive treatments involve small incisions, reduce pain and risk, and result in shorter recovery times.

What is interventional radiology?

You and your doctor may want to minimize the risk and recovery time of surgery. Through interventional radiology, physicians can look inside the body and target treatment through tiny incisions. This technique is used for more and more medical conditions to provide a less invasive alternative to surgery, such as for treatment of uterine fibroids.

Trinity Hospital offers patients many options for treatment through interventional radiology. These procedures are often the first-line care for many conditions. Compared to traditional, open surgery, patients may experience less risk of complications and a smoother healing process.

When is interventional radiology an option?

Interventional radiologists at Trinity Hospital treat many patients who may have once required surgery. Biopsies, uterine fibroids and vascular diseases are some of the common cases we address. Interventional oncology is also a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Physicians are able to target cancer therapies directly into the tumor with fewer side effects.

Which conditions may be treated non-surgically?

Trinity Hospital offers expertise in performing a range of procedures to diagnose and treat disorders through interventional radiology. These interventions may help patients avoid surgery.

Some of the more commonly performed procedures in interventional radiology include:

After a consultation with an interventional radiologist, patients receive pre-operative through follow-up care. Many procedures allow patients to return home the same day or within 24 hours.

Who performs the procedures?

At Trinity Hospital, interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians with advanced training in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. These physicians rely on the latest imaging technologies to guide their instruments in procedures, as well as their own broad diagnostic and clinical experience.

Board certification is administered by the American College of Radiology in both diagnostic radiology and vascular/interventional radiology. Physicians are skilled in the diagnosis of abnormalities of the arteries, veins and lymphatic system as well as imaging-directed interventional procedures.

How procedures are performed?

Unlike traditional surgery, minimally invasive procedures use imaging guidance for the precise insertion of a needle into the patient. Treatment is delivered where it is needed, reducing trauma to the body and speeding recovery.

This technique may be used for a biopsy, drug injection, to burn or freeze tumors or for many other procedures. Sometimes a catheter or small tube is inserted, which can then be used to drain fluid or to place a balloon catheter to open blocked arteries—a common procedure known as angioplasty.

Interventional radiologists have advanced many minimally invasive procedures. Some examples include angioplasty to treat heart disease, and uterine fibroid embolization to eliminate fibroids without surgery, and the catheter-delivered stent to treat peripheral arterial disease.
