Breast Tomosynthesis - 3D Mammography
Advocate BroMenn Medical Center now offers patients an advanced screening and diagnostic tool called digital breast tomosynthesis, also referred to as 3D mammography, at both the hospital’s Women’s Center and at the Advocate BroMenn Outpatient Center. 3D mammography imaging captures multiple “slices” of tissue and making it easier for doctors to see abnormalities.
Multiple angled images are acquired as the X-ray tube sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images in just seconds. By viewing these images sequentially, it is easier for the radiologist to visualize a mass, separate from overlapping breast tissue. A mass will be more conspicuous as it will stand out and not be camouflaged in dense breast tissue.
3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time. There is no additional compression required.
The new technology reduces the percentage of patients who may be “called back” from a screening mammogram for additional imaging. Overlapping tissue is separated and thus decreases the need to call back a patient for a questionable mass. The radiologist can scroll through images of the patient’s entire breast, like pages of a book.
Benefits of 3D Mammography
- Improves the ability to screen for and detect potential breast cancers.
- Helps pinpoint size, shape, and location of abnormalities.
- Increases the ability to accurately visualize abnormalities in dense breast tissue, which is often found in younger women.
- Helps distinguish harmless abnormalities from real tumors, leading to fewer callbacks and less anxiety for women.
