Advocate Good Shepherd cardiovascular intensive care nurse Emily Hendler is known for empowering and educating her patients and her co-workers. Because she embodies Advocate Health Care’s core nursing values, Hendler has been recognized as a winner of The Advocate Nurse Award.

Emily and the other 15 winning nurses will be recognized by Advocate Health Care’s executive leaders in a celebration taking place on April 18 at the health system’s Downers Grove headquarters.

“Each of these nurses live out clinical excellence, compassion, patient-centered wholistic care and other core values of The Advocate Nurse through the work they do every day,” said Susan Campbell, Advocate Health Care senior vice president and chief nursing officer. “They are our unsung heroes – the heart and soul of Advocate Health Care.”

Emily not only cares for her patients, she educates them, shares feedback with them and welcomes their feedback. A resident of Wonder Lake, Ill., Emily believes that building trust with her patients helps in their recovery and in maintaining wellness. She has been a nurse for 12 years, seven of them at Good Shepherd.

When it comes to empowering and educating, Emily doesn’t stop with patients. She does the same for her colleagues by volunteering to take on new equipment training and then working with them until they are comfortable with the new processes.

“She’s a problem-solver, a collaborator, a great listener and a compassionate caregiver,” said Marianne Araujo, vice president of nursing and chief nursing executive at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. “How fortunate we are to have her as a member of our Good Shepherd family.”
