IBM Watson Health recognizes the hospital for clinical and operational excellence

Chicago, IL – In recognition of its performance on patient safety, inpatient and outpatient quality of care, financial stability, operational efficiency and patient experience measures, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center has been named to the 100 Top Hospitals list by IBM Watson HealthTM, formerly known as Truven Health Analytics®.

Advocate Illinois Masonic was one of three Chicago area Major Teaching Hospitals to make the list. It is the seventh time the medical center, located in the Lake View neighborhood, has received the distinction.

Two other hospitals in the Advocate system, Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Ill. and Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ill., were among just seven other Illinois hospitals that achieved the recognition.

“We are proud and delighted to be a part of Watson Health’s 100 Top Hospitals, an honor that reflects the commitment of our associates and physicians to provide safe, high quality and efficient care for our patients,” says Susan Nordstrom Lopez, President of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. “Keeping a laser focus on delivering exceptional and cost-effective patient care is at the forefront of everything we do and what makes Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center worthy of this prestigious recognition.”

To make IBM Watson Health’s elite group, hospitals must not only provide the best possible care for patients, they must also demonstrate excellence as an efficiently run organization. IBM Watson Health considers the 100 Top as shining examples for others to follow.

“The country’s best hospitals have proven that an unrelenting focus on quality, supported by constant measurement against peer performance benchmarks, can drive improved outcomes while reducing costs and growing profit margins,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president, 100 Top Hospitals Programs, IBM Watson Health.  “Congratulations to this 25th anniversary class of 100 Top Hospitals who have helped raise the bar for healthcare in the U.S. and improve the healthcare experiences of the people in their communities.”

Based on the results of this year’s study, the IBM Watson Health researchers extrapolate that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

  • More than 102,000 additional lives could be saved
  • More than 43,000 additional patients could be complication-free
  • More than $4.4 billion in inpatient costs could be saved
  • Approximately 200,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days

The Advocate sites were chosen from 2,740 eligible U.S. hospitals. Key performance benchmarks for award winners included survival rates, readmission rates and shorter length of stay, among others.
