Ariel Katz, MD, MPH, FACP, DABOM
Program Director

We provide rigorous, evidence-based training that equips residents with the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment needed to excel in modern medical practice. Our vision is to develop future physician leaders who provide exceptional patient care and thrive in a supportive, collaborative, and learner-centered environment. Each year, our graduates successfully match into competitive fellowship programs and pursue outstanding careers in hospital medicine, primary care, and subspecialty practice throughout the country. Medical education has been a cornerstone of my career for more than 20 years. I began my academic journey at Cook County Hospital as a Clerkship Director, where I developed a passion for teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. I later taught Pathophysiology at Chicago Medical School, helping learners build a strong foundation in the mechanisms of disease and their clinical manifestations. Since joining Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in 2021, I have continued my commitment to training the next generation of physicians.

I firmly believe that great internists are built on a deep understanding of pathophysiology and the cardinal manifestations of disease. While medicine continues to advance with new diagnostics, therapeutics, and innovations, the ability to recognize patterns of illness and understand the underlying mechanisms remain the foundation of excellent clinical care. My goal is to help residents develop both the scientific knowledge and clinical judgment needed to care for patients with confidence, curiosity, and compassion.

In addition, one of my personal passions is teaching the principles of Lifestyle Medicine, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, substance use, and social connection. At Masonic, residents learn not only the latest evidence-based therapies and cutting-edge treatments, but also how to help patients achieve healthier and more fulfilling lives through sustainable lifestyle change. We believe that some of the most powerful interventions in medicine begin with empowering patients to take an active role in their own health and well-being.
